What a fast website is actually worth to an Indian SMB

Performance is not a vanity metric. Here is how load time maps to enquiries, ad costs and search rankings — with the numbers that matter.

Most agency pitches talk about page speed as if it were a badge. It isn't. It is a cost line.

Where the money actually leaks

Paid traffic. If you are running Google or Meta ads, every second of load time is budget you already spent burning on people who left before the page rendered. Mobile users on Indian 4G are the majority of your traffic, and they are the least patient segment you have.

Organic ranking. Core Web Vitals are a ranking signal. LCP, INP and CLS are measured on real users, not on your laptop. A site that tests well on a desktop in an office and badly on a mid-range Android in a metro is a site that will not rank.

Trust. This one is unmeasurable but real. A slow, janky site signals a business that cuts corners. Buyers making a five or six figure decision notice.

The targets worth holding

  • Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds on a throttled mobile connection, not on your office wifi.
  • Interaction to Next Paint under 200ms. This is where heavy JavaScript frameworks hurt if used carelessly.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. Reserve space for images and ads. Most CLS problems are one missing width attribute.

What actually gets you there

Server-render the content. Ship less JavaScript. Serve images in modern formats at the size they are displayed. Self-host or preload fonts. Cache aggressively at the edge.

None of this is exotic. It is the default if the site is built properly the first time, and expensive to retrofit if it wasn't.

The honest caveat

A fast site does not fix a weak offer. If your positioning is unclear and your pricing is hidden, shaving a second off load time will not save you. Performance multiplies whatever conversion rate you already have — it does not create one.
